Nigerian Delegation Tours the Kissimmee River
In April 2006, Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies (CES) at Riverwoods Field Lab hosted a delegation of Nigerian VIP’s including Government officials, scientists, engineers and Nigerian royalty. Nigeria is facing many similar environmental issues as southern Florida, as their country is becoming more populated and industrialized. The Niger River and delta is comparable in form and function to Florida’s greater Everglades’ watershed spanning from the Kissimmee River to the Florida Keys.

The Nigerian Delegation was lead on a specialized tour of the Kissimmee –Okeechobee – Everglades watershed by Professor C. P. Wolf, Social Impact Assessment Center in New York and our local expert, Stan Bronson, Director of Florida Earth Foundation.

The Nigerians arrived at Riverwoods Field Lab ready for a day exploring the restored river via pontoon boat to view the success of the restoration, first hand. The group was extremely excited to conduct wading birds surveys and view over 30 alligators sunning on the newly formed sandbars found throughout the restored sections of the river.

The Nigerian VIP’s view their exploration of the Kissimmee River and Everglades watershed as a valuable lesson learned, highlighting what to do, and what not to do, as the Niger Delta enters the modern world.

Manatee on the KissimmeeManatee on the Kissimmee River
Over the years, there have been many rumors about manatees on the river but none of these sitings had been confirmed.  However, on January 13, 2004, the first recorded manatee was seen on the Kissimmee River.   He was a young one but probably old enough to be on his own.  He was spotted in Riverwoods Run, the run just south of S-65C Lock and Dam Structure.  Another observer saw what appeared to be a second larger manatee just prior to seeing the smaller one.  It is presumed that this was the mother.  FAU took several photos which were distributed to FWC and SFWMD.
