Welcome

The Riverwoods Field Laboratory (RFL) is a facility jointly managed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the Florida Center for Environmental Studies (CES) . Riverwoods' main mission is to support research and educational activities related to the restoration of the Kissimmee River and the greater Everglades watershed.

Established in 1995, Riverwoods coordinates the activities of research scientists, students, and technicians from state and out-of-state organizations and institutions, including universities, water management districts and other agencies.

CES, in collaboration with SFWMD, has developed a comprehensive Education and Research Program at Riverwoods targeting secondary and post-secondary students, educators, faculty, scientists, environmental professionals, and adults. The program highlights water resources education using the greater Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades (KOE) watershed as a model, focusing on the restoration of the greater Everglades ecosystem and the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).

Bats of Florida Presentation at Riverwoods &
Night Hike at the Pearce Homestead
May 17, 2008 from 6pm - 8:00pm

Please join us for a free presentation on Florida's native bats that will be conducted by Cindy and George Marks on May 17th from 6 - 8 pm, starting at Riverwoods Field Lab located in Cornwell, and ending on the banks of the Kissimmee River at the historic Pearce Homestead. Cynthia and George Marks, established the Florida Bat Center, a non profit organization for the purpose of protecting and preserving Florida's native bats. Over the past fifteen years they have presented hundreds of educational programs about bats, rescued and cared for hundreds of injured and orphaned bats, worked with state and local agencies on numerous bat conservation projects, and helped home and business owners with bats in their buildings. In 2006, the board of directors changed the name to the Florida Bat Conservancy, as it was decided the new name better describes their statewide conservation activities.

They will be conducting an interactive, educational Bats of Florida presentation inside at Riverwoods' Conference Center starting at 6 pm. Afterwards, we will carpool just three miles east to the historic Pearce Homestead to search for native bats along the Kissimmee River. We will have "bat detectors" and teach our guests how to use this fun and educational equipment. They will also be selling their autographed best seller Bats of Florida book - a must have for bat enthusiasts! This is the first book published on the topic of bats in Florida. It provides a description of each Florida species and includes sections on bat biology, natural history, echolocation, bat conservation, bats in buildings, and bat houses. Complete with color photographs of each Florida species and numerous black-and-white photographs, drawings, tables, charts, range maps, and an illustrated key for identifying Florida species, it provides interesting and educational reading while serving as a reference on Florida bats.

Please call or email to register for this free lecture, as space is limited! :
